Job Description


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops and implements standards of care and guidelines for breastfeeding mothers and their newborns.
  • Conveys knowledge and skilled in the physiology and clinical management of breastfeeding to breastfeeding staff.
  • Reviews care routines, policies, procedures and/or other aspects of the mother-baby hospital experience with involved clinical staff in order to highlight successes or needs of lactating mothers and their breastfeeding infants.
  • Provides one to one breastfeeding instructions to lactating mothers requiring additional support beyond the mother-baby nurse's scope.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals and the effects on lactation and educates patients and staff.
  • Promotes breastfeeding and assists mothers in reaching their own goals of breastfeeding.
  • Assess patient's breastfeeding knowledge and uses clinical judgement to determine health care needs of patient and appropriate plan of care.
  • Possesses specialized skills and abilities regarding: assessment, intervention based on patient history and assessment, initiation and modifications of complex situations and related therapies and interventions.


Qualifications

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

WORK EXPERIENCE:
Experienced nurses are defined as having the knowledge and skills commensurate with peers with similar training, and experience functioning on the unit.

LICENSE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION:
  • Current RN licensure issued by Board of Nurse Examiners of the State of Texas to practice professional nursing.
  • RNs are supported in obtaining certification in their specialty area.
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider.
  • Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider - Neonatal Resuscitation Program
  • Current International Board of Lactation Consultants (IBCLC).

EDUCATION & TRAINING:
Work requires a general level of knowledge and clinical competencies as typically acquired through the completion of an accredited school of nursing program resulting in an Associate Degree, Diploma or Baccalaureate degree in nursing.

SKILLS:
  • Technical, clerical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to total patient care/area in order to safely and efficiently treat patients.
  • Good verbal and written communications skills necessary in order to be clearly and easily understood by patients, families and members of the Health Care team.
  • Writes/print legibly in order to document accurately and understandably, and to provide direction to support staff and others.
  • Demonstrates a pleasant, helpful and caring demeanor in order to be an effective patient advocate.
